Specialized Women’s Health Therapy Program
For Breast Cancer-Related Rehabilitation
The Regional Therapy Center offers a specialized Women’s Health Therapy Program for women recovering from breast surgery and/or the side effects of breast cancer treatments. We have a team of specially trained physical and occupational therapists for inpatients at the hospital and at each of our outpatient locations. The purpose of the rehabilitation program is to ensure that range of motion, strength and function of the involved extremity is regained and maintained during recovery from surgery and during cancer treatments. Rehabilitation includes monitoring for early signs of lymphedema and early intervention to prevent long term deficits that result from untreated lymphedema.
- Team Approach: our physical and occupational therapists work closely with surgeons, oncologists, nurses, and care managers to coordinate rehabilitation before, during, and after a patient’s hospital stay.
- Before Surgery: rehabilitation can begin pre-operatively by referring the patient for a pre-operative rehab evaluation. During this visit, important pre-operative measurements are made in order to document baseline girth and function. The patient is also provided with instruction and practice in exercises and ADL techniques that will be used post-operatively.
- Inpatient Therapy: an inpatient rehabilitation referral post-operative will provide simple exercises, positioning strategies to limit edema, and compensatory skills for daily activities to ensure that the patient is able to care for herself and is able to do the exercises correctly and safely.
- Outpatient Therapy: outpatient therapy can begin two to three weeks after surgery and/or later on in the recovery process, to help women experiencing ongoing or latent onset of physical impairments, pain and difficulty performing activities of daily living. Rehabilitation goals and treatment are individualized to meet each person’s unique needs and expectations. Specially trained therapists are available at all of our Regional Therapy Center locations.
